New York Law Enforcement Officers and the Law - Updates, Practices, and Procedures

The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce additional sessions of a new one day course New York Law Enforcement Officers and the Law - Updates, Practices, and Procedures. This course is designed to encompass the full circle of relevant legal topics law enforcment officers will need to navigate the current constitutional requirements. While some basic legal principles will be reviewd, the focus will be on  the most recent relevant case law. Knowledge of the law, while critical, is only part of learning proper procedures. An understanding of how officers make decisions and how these decisions can impact the constutional requirements will also be discussed.

This course is designed for all police officers; wheather they are patrol officers, plain clothes investigators or supervisors in any assignment. In addition to learning the applicable law, the focus is on how these precedents directly impact an officer in the performance of his or her duties and strategies to get the job done the right way. Intermixed throughout the course topics listed below will be discussions on officer safety and civil liability. This course is open to all members of law enforcement; however, it is specifically designed for those serving in a police law enforcement capacity.

Areas of Focus:

  • The law pertaining to street encounters and traffic stops
  • Warrentless searches and seizures
  • Issues related to entry into residences to arrest and / or search
  • Legal aspects of interrogations and confessions - both on the street and in the interview room
  • Trends in court decisions pertaining to use of force

This course will be taught by Chief Michael Ranalli of the Glenville, New York police department. Chief Ranalli has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, serving in many different ranks with many different responsibilities. Chief Ranalli has been a member of the New York State Bar for years, as well as a published author in such topics as Search and Seizure and is Force Science Institute Certified. He brings a wealth of knowledge on street and higher level police experience to this training.

Pre-registration is required. All interested parties must register one week prior to the course. We expect a lot of interest, and seats are limited. The location of the training and class times will be provided through an email confirmation; therefore you must register in order to attend.
