Police Bike Patrol Course

This forty hour course is designed to provide the trainee with the skills necessary to safely and effectively use a bicycle to perform a full range of police patrol duties.  On-bike instruction progresses from basic bike handling skills to negotiating urban obstacles, performing high-speed dismounts, suspect apprehension techniques, and live fire exercises.

Location:

State University of New York at Buffalo, North Campus, Amherst, NY

Required Equipment:

Police mountain bike fitted to the individual officer, equipped with a pedal retention system and rear-mounted kickstand.  Trainees must wear full bike patrol uniform including body armor, duty belt, helmet, eye protection, and bike gloves.  Padded bicycle shorts are not required but are highly recommended.  Fifty rounds of ammunition for Friday's live fire exercise is also required.  Rain gear is recommended.

Repair Equipment:

Each officer must have three tire levers and three spare inner tubes.  Each department must bring one on-bike air pump and one bike hex key set.

Course Fee:

Course fee of $150.00 per trainee includes all instructional materials, facility fees, and lunch for the five-day period.  Make check or purchase order payable to SUNY at Buffalo Police Department and mail to: NYS University Police, Bissell Hall, Buffalo, NY 14260.

Note:

Bike patrol is a strenuous physical activity that requires a high degree of physical fitness and personal motivation.  Participants should be both enthusiastic and physically fit.
