Police Crime Scene Evidence Specialist Course

The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy in cooperation with the Town of Amherst Police Department will present a two-week Police Crime Scene Evidence Specialist Course. This course is certified by the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services and is recommended for those officers responsible for processing crime scenes.
Instruction will focus on crime scene management and processing and will include the following topics: crime scene documentation; rules of evidence; search and seizure; moot court; forensic laboratory services; controlled substances; crime scene sketching; pracitial application; latent fingerprints practical application; techniques of examining; collecting and preserving physical evidence; latest technologies available; and multiple mock crime scene practical application. Successful completion of this course will require passing a final written cumulative examination.
The following is a list of supplies and equipment which you are required to bring to the class each day.
Crime scene kit containing, at minimum, the following:
- Clipboard
- Sketch templates
- Pencils/pens/markers
- Tape measures (2)
- Magnetic compass
- Fingerprint brushes, gel tape and lifters
- Dusting powder (black and/or dual-use)
- Scissors
- Flashlight
- Carrying case for equipment
- SLR or equivalent camera capable of manual operation - digital camera plus flash card
- Camera owner's manual
- External electronic flash (not built-in pop-up)
- Macro lens or camera capable of taking close-up photographs
- Variety of photographic scales (i.e., six inch, angled scale)
- Remote sync cord
- Shutter release cable
- Zoom lens
- Tripod
- Adequate supply of batteries
