Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 34-year-old Sandy Jones of Buffalo has been sentenced by State Supreme Court Justice Russell P. Buscaglia to a determinate sentence of 20 years in prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. He was sentenced as a second violent felony offender.

On September 4, 2017, at approximately 12:33 p.m., Buffalo Police responded to a report of a man shot on Wyoming Avenue. While driving to the scene, dispatch notified the officers that a shooting victim drove himself to ECMC from Wyoming Avenue and left his car in the ramp of the emergency department. The victim was treated for gunshot wounds to his abdomen and left wrist.

Shortly after the shooting on Wyoming Avenue, police received a 911 call of a second shooting victim at an address Thatcher Avenue, approximately one mile away from the first shooting. Police found the defendant sitting on the front porch of the home, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his stomach. The defendant insisted that he was shot in the vicinity of the Thatcher Avenue address. He was taken to ECMC to be treated for the injury.

The victim testified that he was returning home from the grocery store when the defendant approached his vehicle armed with a gun in each hand. The victim pulled one of the guns away from the defendant and was subsequently shot with the other gun. After being shot, the victim fired a shot at the defendant, who returned fire. When the defendant fled, the victim drove himself to the hospital.

A jury found the defendant guilty, as charged, on one count of Assault in the First Degree and one count of Criminal Possession in the Second Degree following a six day trial in October 2018.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lauren Nash of the DA’s Tactical Prosecution Unit and Assistant District Attorney Alicia M. Lilley of the DA’s Felony Trials Bureau.
