Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 22-year-old Keona Owens of Buffalo has been arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge Barbara Johnson-Lee on one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree.
It is alleged that on July 17, 2018, the defendant and her boyfriend Bashar Hall injured her son, 2 ½-year-old Xavion Hazzard, at their home on Weaver Street in the City of Buffalo. The child was pronounced dead at John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. The medical examiner determined that the boy died from multiple blunt force trauma.
Hall was arraigned on one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree on Wednesday, July 18. He is scheduled to appear in Buffalo City Court on Monday, July 23 for a felony hearing. He remains was remanded on $500,000 cash, bond or property.
Owens is scheduled to return on Wednesday, July 25 at 9:30 a.m. for a felony hearing. She was remanded on $500,000 cash, bond or property.
If convicted on the charge, Owens faces up to 25 years in prison.
Colleen Curtin Gable, Chief of the DA’s Homicide Bureau, is prosecuting the case.
As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
