On July 14, 2018, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Mastin shot 28-year-old Dion Donald, multiple times with an illegal handgun as he sat in the passenger seat of a parked vehicle at a gas station on the corner of Genesee Street and Crossman Avenue in the City of Buffalo. A jury found Mastin guilty, as charged, of one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class “A-1” felony, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class “C” violent felony, on December 23, 2019.

The jury also convicted 24-year-old Jamal Young of Buffalo of one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
