Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Flaherty, Jr. announces that 41-year-old Froilan Torres of Rochester has been arraigned before Erie County Court Judge Sheila A. DiTullio on an indictment charging him with Manslaughter in the First Degree for the beating death of his mother, 57-year-old Gloria Rivera.

It is alleged that on October 9, 2016 at about 5:00 p.m., the defendant struck his mother about the head with a vase while inside her home at 1704 South Park Avenue in Buffalo. The victim was rushed to Mercy Hospital where she died soon after her arrival.

Torres pleaded not guilty and was remanded to jail without bail.

He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if he is convicted of the charge.

Acting DA Flaherty commends the Buffalo Police Department for its thorough investigation with special credit to Officer Regina Weeks, Lt. Kevin Brinkworth and Detective Richard Wagstaff.

Assistant District Attorney Gary W. Hackbush of DA Flaherty’s Homicide Bureau is prosecuting the crime.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
