Erie County government donating masks to those in the community who are in need of facial covering

Buffalo, NY – After numerous conversations with the Poloncarz administration which started one month ago, Legislator Howard Johnson announced today that Erie County will begin public mask distribution as a way to promote safe and healthy practices in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On April 15^th, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an Executive Order requiring anyone who is unable to maintain 6 feet of social distance to wear a face covering in public. Masks help to protect against the transmission of the Coronavirus among people in close proximity by hindering the spread of droplets that may carry the virus. Still, social distancing remains important to ensure that COVID-19 cases remain manageable in the Buffalo area.

“We need to continue to take our own health and safety seriously,” said Legislator Johnson. “My office has been receiving calls from individuals who cannot afford or find masks but want to be safe when they have to go out to the store, to doctor offices, and other places. I am glad we are able to offer this service to the public and ensure that everyone has the ability to help keep themselves and their family safe during this time.”

Two distributions are scheduled to take place. The first will be on May 20th at 234 Jefferson in the parking lot of the Frederick Douglass Apartments from 12 pm – 2 pm. The second distribution will be on May 27^th from 10 am – 2 pm in the parking lot of the William-Emslie YMCA during the ConnectLife Blood Drive.
