Buffalo, NY- At the Erie County Legislature’s July 11th session, Erie County Legislator Timothy Meyers honored Jamie Lee Parker as the Erie County Legislature’s Citizen of the Month for July 2019. Ms. Parker resides in South Buffalo and works as the Executive Director of Parker Academy. Parker Academy provides free childcare for school-aged children while also offering after school care and summer camp options as well as academic tutoring.
Parker, originally from Grand Island, noticed a lack of childcare options and educational support in Buffalo after she moved back to the area several years ago. Recently, a 2019 report from the WNY Women’s Foundation highlighted numerous areas in Erie County which are considered “childcare deserts” where few options exist for working parents. Childcare is often the highest expense incurred by working families, even surpassing housing and transportation. Parker Academy has provided an invaluable resource to students and families at multiple Buffalo Public Schools by offering their services at no cost.
“Jamie Lee Parker saw a problem in the community and stepped up to address it. She has filled a void that many working people in the community are grateful for, and she is making a difference in the lives of children from all across Buffalo. I am honored to present her with this award and I know she will continue the good work she’s doing for years to come, “ said Legislator Meyers.
New York State Assembly Member Patrick Burke joined in the ceremony honoring Ms. Parker.
