Initially passed in 2019, revisions to the PACE Law make sustainable energy loan program more accessible to the public

 

Erie County, NY – Legislator and Majority Leader Timothy Meyers, D – Cheektowaga, is the prime sponsor of a new local law aimed at revising the Energize NY Benefit Financing Program Law of Erie County, also known as the PACE Law. Originally passed by the Legislature in 2019, this revision will increase access to the existing program which is designed to benefit businesses who utilize renewable energy options when remodeling and investing in commercial properties.

 

Examples of these renovations can include the installation of solar panels and updated LED lighting. Availability of the funding could also apply to the installation of heating and cooling systems which are more energy efficient. The PACE program allows for 100% financing of up to 10% of the properties total assessed value, with repayment made at the time the properties tax bill is collected.

 

Discussed in the Legislature’s Energy & Environment Committee, where Meyers serves as Chair, the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning noted the necessity of this funding to update older commercial buildings, including those with rental properties. The program established a sustainable energy loan program which provides low interest, transferable loans for qualifying renewable energy updates made to local, privately-owned Erie County properties.

 

Legislator Meyers said “The PACE program is an important step in working towards eliminating our carbon footprint by providing access to crucial funding for small business owners. Many want to make improvements to be more energy efficient, and this is a way that Erie County can support them in our shared goal of protecting the environment and preserving our future.” The Local Law is expected to be voted on in the Legislature after a public hearing is held on November 5th and will be presented to the County Executive following a formal vote.
