New York State Department of Transportation to install “No Turn on Red Sign”

Erie County, NY – Erie County Legislator Timothy Meyers and Cheektowaga Councilmember Brian Nowak have announced that the New York State Department of Transportation (“NYSDOT”) will install a “no turn on red” sign at the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Genesee Street in Cheektowaga to help motorist and pedestrian safety.

Legislator Meyers and Councilman Meyers jointly contacted NYSDOT in November to request a traffic study after hearing complaints from the Pine Ridge Fire Department regarding the intersection of Pine Ridge Road and Genesee Street. First responders were often delayed trying to quickly respond to emergencies in the district, given the high traffic flow in the area.

New York State quickly responded and conducted a traffic study. This included a survey of recent accidents, a thorough field investigation, and an analysis of the intersection’s current operations.  This week, Legislator Meyers received notification that NYSDOT will be installing a “NO TURN ON RED” sign to enhance the overall safety of the intersection.

Legislator Meyers said, “I’m happy to see the Town of Cheektowaga, Erie County, and New York State working together to make things safer for the mutual constituents we all serve. I know how hard our volunteer fire companies work, and I’m proud to do anything I can to make their work a little easier.”

Councilmember Nowak added, “This new sign will make it safer for volunteer firefighters to quickly get vehicles in and out of the firehouse. As we all know, seconds matter in emergencies. I’m thankful for Legislator Meyers’ support and partnership in getting this important work completed.”
