In November 2010, the residents of Erie County sent a very clear message: they wanted smaller county government.
A referendum to downsize the Erie County Legislature from 15 to 11 was approved overwhelmingly with 83 percent of the vote. It was not only just a vote for fewer representatives, but also for less bureaucracy and more transparency and accountability.
This past election, the residents decided who would be honored with one of the 11 seats. I ran unopposed but still was nonetheless grateful for the support given to me. Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, I will represent the new District 11, which has the largest landmass and is composed of the towns of Boston, Brant, Collins, Concord, Eden, Evans, North Collins, Orchard Park and Sardinia, along with the villages of Angola, Farnham, Gowanda, North Collins, Orchard Park and Springville.
This new large district comes with a lot of responsibility, and I look forward to the challenge and meeting the needs of the residents.
Geographically, it is the largest district, and all the communities have similar needs, mainly infrastructure maintenance. My focus will be providing safe roadways and bridges, as well as ensuring all needed services are provided. My staff and I are always available to the more than 80,000 residents in the 11th District.
There were some people who questioned the ability of 11 legislators to represent the entire county. I fully believe that the new governing body will not only represent the county well, but better than 15 did.
When more elected officials sit at a table, the more politics plays a role. I believe with six members in the majority (Democratic) caucus and five in the minority (Republican) caucus, we will be forced to work together and accomplish more without unnecessary bickering and backroom deals.
The downsizing also carries cost savings, including fewer legislators’ salaries and reductions in staff, as well as benefits paid for those positions.
A smaller Legislature has heightened accountability and transparency. Decisions we make will carry more weight than before, and that responsibility will create greater efficiency. Ensuring that a $1.4 billion budget is carried out properly is our main responsibility, and I believe the new Legislature is up to the task and will be diligent with your tax dollars.
I think the residents of Erie County will be pleased with their decision to reduce the Legislature and will see improved efficiency from day one. As we look to the New Year, I want to wish everyone a very happy holiday season.
