Legislator Mills announces grant funding secured to support Scenic Byway

BywayLegislator John J. Mills, R-Aurora/Orchard Park, announced that funding to support the WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway has been secured. During the May 12, 2011 session, the Erie County Legislature unanimously voted to allot $5,000 and assist the WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway in obtaining a $66,000 federal grant.

The grant will support the Byway’s mission of promoting the scenic beauty, history and cultural heritage of southern Erie County through the design and installation of interpretive signage. This effort will identify the Byway’s many WNY attractions by creating a self-guided tour of the Southtowns.

“The Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway is an amazing effort to promote tourism in southern Erie County. Through the purchase of these signs, we enhance the experience for all who travel the Byway to learn more about the destinations,” Legislator Mills said. “From the Roycroft Campus to the Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad Station, the Byway features many historically significant sites that are unique to our area. This effort will help promote these destinations and many more.”

The WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway was awarded the federal grant through a competitive process. Part of the grant stipulation requires that the Byway provide $16,600 in matching funds. Through significant efforts the Byway raised $11,600. Legislator Mills said by supporting the efforts through this one-time $5,000 allowance, the Legislature will ensure the grant isn’t lost, along with a tremendous opportunity to promote cultural, historic and scenic tourism in Western New York.

Scenic Byway founder and current president, Bob Lennartz, of Orchard Park added, “John has been a staunch supporter of the Byway since its initial development effort began in 2002. The County’s funding, plus grants from the municipalities located along the Byway, will enable federal funds to flow to Western New York. It also sets the stage for additional federal support.”
