Legislator Mills urges governor to include funding for Sturgeon Point Marina in 2019 Budget

During Thursday’s session, Erie County Legislator John Mills introduced a resolution urging Governor Cuomo to include funding for Sturgeon Point Marina in the Town of Evans in his 2019 budget. The resolution passed the Legislature unanimously.

The Sturgeon Point Marina is the only full service marina located along the 40-mile stretch of Lake Erie Shoreline between Dunkirk and Buffalo and serves as a “safe-harbor” for distressed boaters. The Town of Evans has been spending $50,000 a year to dredge sediment caused by deterioration of the west breakwater.

“The Sturgeon Point Marina provides access to first responders and emergency boats that must be able to use the launch 12 months of the year,” said Legislator Mills. “If the west breakwater is allowed to deteriorate any further, it will become a serious public safety hazard. Governor Cuomo must make our waterfront a priority and allocate the funds needed to maintain the marina.”
