Under this year’s budget, New York State is proposing a $2.5 million cut to the usual $15 million in funding allocated to the local Zoos, Botanical Gardens and Aquariums (ZBGA) program.  In Erie County, this would be a major financial setback to The Buffalo Zoo, Botanical Gardens and Tifft Nature Preserve.

“Institutions like the Botanical Gardens are not only treasures in our neighborhoods, but they are also vital to the greater Western New York Community,” said Legislator Dixon. “On any given day you can see groups of school children, families, couples, friends enjoying everything these organizations have to offer, and you can see a return on the public investment that is made.”

The cuts would take away roughly $60,000 from the Buffalo Zoo, $37,000 from Tifft Nature Preserve and $14,000 from the Botanical Gardens.

“I am disappointed that the state would pull the rug out from under some of the most vibrant attractions in our community,” said Legislator Mills. “Not only do they provide direct educational benefits but they encourage visitors to spend money at other local establishments. Our economy deserves every little bit of help it can get.”

Current funding is supposed to run through March 2021, but under the proposed budget, the cut would go into effect for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
