The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy in cooperation with the Town of Amherst Police Department will present a one week Basic Investigative Photography Course.  This course is certified by the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services as a pre-requisite for the Police Crime Scene and Evidence Specialist Course which will be held sometime in the future.

Instruction will focus on crime scene photography and equipment.  The following topics will be covered; photography and videography, digital photography, basic techniques of photography, lighting techniques, flash photography, and evidence photography.  Successful completion of this course will require passing a final written cumulative examination.

Officers enrolled in this course must bring the following equipment to the classroom each day:

  • SLR/Digital Camera with owner's manual and flash cards
  • External electronic flash (not built in pop up)
  • Macro lens or camera capable of taking close up photographs
  • Variety of photographic scales (i.e., six inch, angled scales)
  • Remote sync cord; shutter release cable; zoom lens; tripod; adequate supply of batteries
  • Thumb drive
  • Evidence markers
    • If you do not have the proper equipment, you will not be allowed to attend this training


**NOTE** The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy is following strict COVID-19 guidelines.  All participants and instructors attending this in-service will have their temperatures taken at the entrance to the Amherst Facility.  In addition, all attending must bring and wear a face cover, and adhere to the 6 foot social distancing guidelines.  We ask that if you are experiencing any virus symptoms, that you do not attend this class.

Please Note:

Course enrollment will be limited to sixteen (16) officers.  Out of county officers must provide a Certificate of Residency form.  Please call for the out of county fee schedule.  Unless enrollment permits otherwise, agencies are limited to allow equal opportunity to this course.  There will also be a scheduled "Night Shoot" during the week and officers will be required to work 1600 - 2400.

Course Cost:

There is no course cost for Erie County Police Agencies.  Other agencies should call to see if a fee applies.
