Police Crime Scene Evidence Specialist Course

Description:

The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy in cooperation with the Town of Amherst Police Department will present a two-week Police Crime Scene Evidence Specialist Course.  This course is certified by the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services and is recommended for those officers responsible for processing crime scenes.

Instruction will focus on crime scene management and processing and will include the following topics: crime scene documentation; rules of evidence; search and seizure; moot court; forensic laboratory services; controlled substances; crime scene sketching; pracitial application; latent fingerprints practical application; techniques of examining; collecting and preserving physical evidence; latest technologies available; and multiple mock crime scene practical application.  Successful completion of this course will require passing a final written cumulative examination.

The following is a list of supplies and equipment which you are required to bring to the class each day.

Crime scene kit containing, at minimum, the following:

    • Clipboard
    • Sketch templates
    • Pencils/pens/markers
    • Tape measures (2)
    • Magnetic compass
  • Fingerprint brushes, gel tape and lifters
  • Dusting powder (black and/or dual-use)
  • Scissors
  • Flashlight
  • Carrying case for equipment

Photography Equipment:
    • SLR or equivalent camera capable of manual operation - digital camera plus flash card
    • Camera owner's manual
    • External electronic flash (not built-in pop-up)
    • Macro lens or camera capable of taking close-up photographs
    • Variety of photographic scales (i.e., six inch, angled scale)
    • Remote sync cord
    • Shutter release cable
  • Zoom lens
  • Tripod
  • Adequate supply of batteries

Pre-requisites: 
Basic Investigative Photography Course
 
Please Note:
 
Course enrollment will be limited to twenty (20) officers.  "Priority will be given for local law enforcement department's full-time investigators."
 
Out of county officers must provide a certificate of residency form. Please call for out of county fee schedule.  Unless enrollment permits otherwise, agencies are limited to allow equal opportunity to this course.
 
You will be given a Crime Scene Investigation CD during the Basic Investigative Photography Course.  You are to print the student manual and bring it to class each day.  The three ring binder will be provided for you.
 
Course Cost:
 
There is no course cost for Erie County Police Agencies.  (Other agencies should call to see if a fee applies).
 
Please Observe The Academy Dress Code:
 
Uniform or shirt and tie for men, proper business attire for women; blue jeans are "NOT" acceptable.
