Erie County Legislator April N. M. Baskin Names Juweria Dahir Citizen of the Month

Erie County Legislator & Majority Leader April N.M. Baskin honored community activist Juweria Dahir as the Erie County Legislature’s Citizen of the Month for February 2019.  Dahir was presented with a proclamation at the Legislature’s regular session on February 21st .

 

Dahir currently serves as the external affairs manager for the City of Buffalo. She is the daughter of a single mother who is also a Somali refugee and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University at Buffalo. She is currently pursuing her master’s in urban planning and social policy.

 

In 2013, Ms. Dahir founded H.E.A.L. Women Empowerment of Buffalo, to help teach life-skills to socially and economically disadvantaged women in our community. She has been awarded the Buffalo Urban League Young Professionals Community Engagement Award and was a recipient of the 2015 Change Makers “30 Under 30” Award, and the Inaugural Outstanding American Muslim Millennial Award.

 

Legislator Baskin noted that, “I am proud to honor Juweria for all of her many personal accomplishments and the work she does on behalf of our community. She makes Buffalo a better place to live, and I know she will continue to do great things.”
