County Executive Updates on Flood Preparations, Safety

ERIE COUNTY, NY— Erie County Executive Mark C/ Poloncarz was joined today by representatives of the Erie County Departments of Emergency Services and Environment & Planning, as well as from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the NYS Police to give an update on the latest phase of Winter Storm Knife: flood preparation. National Weather Service flood warnings are currently in effect for Cazenovia, Cayuga, and Ellicott Creeks.

“As the snow continues to melt, we are seeing rising waters in area creeks. Vigilance will continue as this phase of Winter Storm Knife develops, and assets are ready to be deployed,” said Poloncarz. “I remind motorists to avoid flooded roads and also to be prepared for possible basement flooding.”

For those threatened by potential flooding, Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein advises immediate precautions. Before flooding begins, these residents should prepare by writing down emergency phone numbers, clear out basements (especially of hazardous materials), and ensure sump pumps are working and have backup power. If flooding is imminent, turn off electrical and gas power to the home and do not enter the basement if any electrical wires are touching the water. Flood waters pose health risks and may be contaminated with bacteria.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office and NYS Police are coordinating efforts to patrol flood-prone roads and close any routes that they may find are flooded. Motorists are reminded to respect road barricades. If your car becomes immobilized by rising water, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Motorists having road information should call 716-989-2500. As of Monday November 24 at 2:45 PM, the following area roads were closed or reporting flooding:
