Comptroller Mychajliw is the only Erie County Comptroller to ever win this prestigious award for producing an easy to comprehend, in-depth report of county finances
(ERIE COUNTY, NY) – Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw announces his office has once again been recognized for its reporting of Erie County finances by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The GFOA noted the outstanding financial reporting practices, recognizing the achievement in Popular Financial Reporting (PAFR). Comptroller Mychajliw first won this award in 2015. He has now received this annual recognition from the GFOA for 7 years in a row and is the first Erie County Comptroller to receive this award.
The PAFR is a comprehensive report that ensures government accountability for Erie County taxpayers. The report is an important piece of the Comptroller’s role of serving as taxpayer watchdog. By providing this information in a clear and concise format, taxpayers have a better understanding of the Erie County budget, and how lawmakers choose to allocate dollars, as well as get a clearer picture on the financial health of the region.
‘I’m very proud of my team, especially our union workers. They served taxpayers well during a challenging year. We produced a comprehensive report on Erie County finances that provides taxpayers a guide as to how their money is being spent. Tax revenue comes from hard working families and businesses. It does not belong to the government. You deserve to know. And that’s my job as your watchdog. This PAFR report is an important resource,” said Comptroller Mychajliw.
Those who worked on the PAFR in the Erie County Comptroller’s office include Steve Dowling, Kelly Terranova, Ryan Glaser, AlisaTranquilli, John Solecki, and Cheryl Mekarski.
One of the areas specifically highlighted by reviewers was the discussion of unassigned fund balance, in layman’s terms Erie County’s rainy day or savings account. The Government Finance Officers Association team that judged Comptroller Mychajliw’s PAFR called the section on unassigned fund balance “informative to interested readers.” Overall, reviewers commented favorably on the production quality to help explain Erie County’s finances.
The GFOA’s Awards for Excellence recognizes innovative contributions in the field of government finance and leading examples of best practice implementation.
“Our team did a phenomenal job in a year like no other. I thank them for their efforts. Our union workers, represented by CSEA, work incredibly hard in our office.,” concluded Comptroller Mychajliw.
