Governor Cuomo has suggested that passing Medicaid costs on to county governments could be one answer to addressing New York State's budget crisis. Comptroller Mychajliw warns such a plan could lead to another disastrous budget crisis for Erie County. Comptroller Mychajliw has sent a letter to Erie County Legislators warning them of the dire situation that could arise if the state chooses to pass on the entire Medicaid bill to local counties.
The letter reads in part: "There is bi-partisan consensus that we will be harmed if New York State decides to force us to pay more in unfunded mandates, something counties have no control over. If the state decides to hit us with an additional "bill" of $177.5 million in Medicaid costs, the consequences would be disastrous, far worse than the damage done by the "Red-Green" budget crisis years ago."
