Town of Marilla Supervisor Earl “Skip” Gingerich and Board Member Brian Nolan join Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw in the shared mission to Save our Skyway

(Marilla) – Erie County Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw was joined by Town of Marilla Supervisor Earl “Skip” Gingerich and Town of Marilla Board member Brian Nolan in opposing the removal of the Skyway.  Many questions and concerns remain, especially about the lack of a feasible and reasonable plan in place to divert 42,500 cars efficiently and safely per day that travel on the elevated bridge.  Both Gingerich and Nolan will support a resolution at their next Town Board meeting in support of “Saving Our Skyway.”

“Stefan called and made a strong and compelling case to pass a resolution like this in Marilla.  My concern is how Marilla taxpayers can be negatively impacted by tearing down the Skyway.  How will New York State and the federal government shift so much traffic without it leading to longer commute times for Marilla residents?  I don’t trust the government at all when it comes to this issue.  The money would be better spent maintaining and repairing roads in and around Marilla,” said Supervisor Gingerich.

“Comptroller Mychajliw has been a strong advocate protecting taxpayers in Marilla.  When Stefan asked if I would support a ‘Save Our Skyway’ resolution I said ‘absolutely.’ Public servants of all political parties must work together on this important issue.  It could negatively impact Marilla commuters. Instead of spending millions of dollars wasting money tearing down the Skyway, spend it here in Marilla on our infrastructure,” said Councilman Nolan.

The Town of Hamburg Board was the first in all of Erie County to pass a resolution opposing the removal or destruction of the Skyway at its Monday, June 7th, 2021, public meeting.  The resolution, written and sponsored by Hamburg Councilwoman Beth Farrell, passed unanimously.  The 5-0 vote was supported in the affirmative by three Democratic Board Members, one Republican and one Conservative.

“Momentum is building across Erie County to ‘Save Our Skyway.’ I’m proud to have been first to submit a resolution giving voice to the people. Now we will work with elected officials of all parties across Erie County to pass resolutions opposing the destruction of the Skyway,” said Hamburg Councilwoman Farrell.

“I voted in favor of the ‘Save our Skyway’ resolution in Hamburg.  Governor Cuomo needs to hear a strong and clear message: many Erie County towns oppose the ill-advised plan to tear down the Skyway. I thank my fellow public servants in Marilla for their support,” said Town of Hamburg Councilman Mike Petrie.

“I’m proud to build support from all over Erie County to ‘Save Our Skyway.’  It is important for local leaders of all political parties and backgrounds to work together on this issue. Leaders put differences aside for the common good. I’m proud to work with Democrats and Republicans to ‘Save Our Skyway,’” concluded Comptroller Mychajliw.
