SEPTEMBER SALES TAX NUMBERS SHOW ERIE COUNTY NEEDS TO STAY OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Sales tax revenue up 17% from one year ago, when many COVID restrictions were still in place

(BUFFALO) – Erie County Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw Jr. released sales tax revenue figures for September, 2021.  Data shows Erie County continues to recover from the financial challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.  September, 2021 sales tax revenue was up $6 million from last year, or 17.19%. 

Erie County collected $42,933,303.44 in sales tax revenue in September, 2021, compared to $36,634,105.44 for September, 2020, when numerous COVID-19 restrictions were still in place.

“Politicians are once again making a lot of noise about possible shutdowns due to reported spikes in COVID-19 cases.  We were told vaccines and mask wearing would get us back to normal.  Businesses need to be allowed to continue operating.   These tax revenue numbers prove the economy can make a comeback if business owners are allowed to remain open.  Local economies cannot afford another shutdown,“said Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw.

Data shows year to date that Erie County sales tax revenue is up $61,486,806.88, or 17.6% compared to the same period last year.

“Taxpayers want to spend their hard-earned money.  Business owners want to stay viable.  COVID-19 shutdowns are harmful.  These sales tax figures are good news. It shows a positive trend.  Politicians should not be making decisions that will damage businesses and hurt taxpayers,” concluded Comptroller Mychajliw.
