New York State Police are warning people in Central New York (CNY) of the Grandparents Scam of the Family Emergency Scam. We want Erie County residents to be aware of such and not fall victim to such a call.

Should you receive a phone call, be it in the middle of the night or during the day, stating your loved one has been in an accident and needs medical attention, to send cash now, or a loved one was arrested and need cash immediately for legal fees be aware that this is a possible scam. The caller will stress the urgency for you to send money immediately. If you received such a call, hang up and call the person claiming to be your loved one, if you can’t reach them try someone close to them, a spouse, child, or sibling. Was the person injured, were they arrested, if not, you are the victim of a scammer.

Two known CNY victims, immediately paid out almost $15,000 to these callers. Be alert, if you receive such a call ask the caller a question which your grandchild or relative would know the answer to but others would not know or be able to find online. Research any call seeking money immediately, even if the caller claims it to be your family. Never send money without verifying the source seeking it.

If you have been victimized by this type of scam, file a complaint with our office, 716-858-6169, the Buffalo Attorney General,716-853-8400, and the Federal Trade Commission, 1-877-382-4357.
