ERIE COUNTY, NY— The Erie County Department of Social Services will be holding two community forums concerning child abuse in April at the Ring of Knowledge area on the main floor of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System’s (B&ECPLS) Central Library. Free and open to the public, these lunchtime events will give interested community members information about the consequences of child abuse from the perspective of both the healthcare and child welfare communities. 

 

THE HEALTHCARE COMMUNITY SPEAKS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE

DATE:                   Wednesday, April 16, 2014

TIME:                    12:00 PM—1:00 PM

LOCATION:          B&ECPLS Central Library, 1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo

SPEAKERS:           Dr. Paula Mazur Children’s Hospital Pediatrician

                                Dr. Jack Coyne, Child Advocacy Center

MODERATORS:  Gavin Kasper, Erie County Department of Social Services

                                Cheryl Moore, Erie County Department of Health

Infants are most vulnerable to the actions of parents and caretakers. These physicians will provide an overview of child abuse in Erie County with emphasis on Safe Sleeping and Shaken Baby Syndrome.


THE CHILD WELFARE COMMUNITY SPEAKS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE

                               Hollis M. Hite, Esq., Assigned Counsel Program

                               Yvonne Vertlieb, Esq., Assigned Counsel Program

Children are our future. The family court system and community agencies are the partners of child protective services when parents and caretakers commit child abuse or neglect. These officials will discuss how the child welfare system supports families while protecting children.
