Panel Discussion will Focus on Increasingly Common Issue of Financial Abuse of Older Adults

ERIE COUNTY, NY—Representatives of the Erie County Department of Social Services will be joined by Erie County’s Council on Elder Abuse President Kathy Kanaley, Legal Services for the Elderly, Disabled or Disadvantaged of WNY Staff Attorney Sarah Duval and Erie County Senior Adult Protective Services Case Worker Michelle Bunce-Book tomorrow, Friday, June 19, 2015, at 12:00 PM at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, 1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo for a community forum on elder financial abuse.

Earlier this week, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz declared June “Elder Abuse Awareness Month” throughout Erie County. Financial abuse is one of the fastest growing forms of elder abuse, with an estimated 42 out of every 1,000 senior citizens in New York State falling victim to this type of abuse.

Topics expected to be discussed as part of tomorrow’s in-depth roundtable dialogue include how the county’s Adult Protective Services component of the Social Services Department identifies, reports, investigates, and addresses cases of elder financial abuse. The panel participants will also provide information and answer questions about how fiscal exploitation impacts the local senior population.
