The Zonta Club of Kenmore kicked off a month of activism for women by welcoming Deputy Erie County Executive Lisa M. Chimera to their monthly business meeting on November 2. The newly-appointed DCE spoke about the needs of women in Erie County and how the county works to meet these needs. The lively discussion also focused on the need for advocacy on women’s issues and how Zonta members can take part in the ongoing dialogue.
“I thank the Zonta Club of Kenmore for including me in this important conversation,” said Deputy Erie County Executive Chimera. “During my time as Legislator, I was involved in several initiatives that focused on the needs of women in our community. I was happy to share information about our county’s local law, that has helped Minority and Women Owned Businesses post-pandemic. More recently, my involvement on the Child Care Task Force has been able to generate funding at the state level, that will improve the lives of so many women, children and families.”
Zonta is an international organization of women founded in Buffalo in 1919. The Zonta Club of Kenmore was one of the first clubs established in 1925. The group stands for women’s rights and advocates for equality, education, and an end to gender-based violence. In Erie County, the BE SAFE Program provides support, resources and safety planning to survivors of intimate partner violence. Their team can be reached through an established hotline at 716-858-4630.
From November 25 through December 10 Zonta will make a public call for the elimination of violence against women and girls through participation in the 16 Days of Activism. During these 16 Days there will be signs and banners throughout the Town of Tonawanda raising awareness of the issue and providing information and resources available for women in abusive situations. Zonta Club of Kenmore will also be working with some area schools to provide education regarding healthy relationships.
On December 3 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Zonta will sponsor a pancake breakfast with all proceeds to benefit survivors of domestic violence. It will be at the Zion United Church of Christ at 15 Koenig Circle in Tonawanda. Tickets are $6 for children under 10 and $10 for adults. Call 716-912-5777 for tickets.
