The Erie County Personnel Department today announced it has begun to allow the public to sign up and pay for civil service exams online. Previously, the Department required civil service test takers to complete a paper application and then mail or drop off the application and payment to their offices in downtown Buffalo.
The Department has selected the Correction Officer/Deputy Sheriff Officer exam as the initial civil service test to allow the public to sign up and pay online. However, they expect that all tests will have this capability soon.
"Like many employers, Erie County has struggled in this hot job market to attract qualified candidates for our open posts," said Personnel Commissioner Brian Bray. "It was clear that the County's traditional method to allow the public to sign up for a civil service test was a significant barrier, particularly for younger generations who are more comfortable applying for positions online. As a result, the Personnel Department staff worked hard to update its processes so that the public can more easily apply for civil service positions Erie County must fill through a competitive exam."
Erie County's civil service process is guided by New York State Civil Service Law, which ensures that the hiring process practices for appointing authorities under its jurisdiction are rooted in merit and fitness. The public can be considered for a competitive class position with Erie County, as well as most other local governmental entities located in Erie County, by signing up for a civil service exam administered by the Erie County Personnel Department.
After a review of their application, candidates whom the Personnel Department deems qualified are sent an admission notice for the exam approximately ten days before the announced exam date. Job candidates can expect results between four and six months after they take the exam. Once results are released, hiring appointing authorities are sent a list of certified eligible candidates to commence their hiring process in accordance with civil service law and rules.
The Department selected the Correction Officer/Deputy Sheriff Officer exam as its initial civil service online filing opportunity because it is one of the most crucial positions in Erie County government. Incumbents supervise and guard incarcerated individuals sentenced by the courts to confinement in the County Correctional Facility. The minimum qualification for this job title is graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and the salary ranges from $50,588 to $68,472.
The last day to sign up for this exam is October 26, 2022, with the exam scheduled to be given on December 10, 2022.
