Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined today by numerous county personnel and outside agencies at the Department of Public Works’ Harlem Highway barn to detail county preparations and advise residents and motorists on anticipated winter weather that is approaching later this week. The Erie County Highways Department currently has 37 plow trucks ready across five districts, with 71 plow drivers working split shifts to cover county roads. 14,800 tons of salt are also in the barns and ready for use.

“Our Department of Public Works is ready to face this first significant snowfall of the season and we are encouraging all motorists and residents to ensure that they are too,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “Put good snow tires on your car, put a winter weather survival kit in your car as well, and always drive to conditions in winter weather. Being prepared is the first step to being safer and we all want to have a safe winter season.”

Joining Poloncarz at the Harlem Highway barn were Deputy County Executive Lisa Chimera, Commissioner of Public Works Bill Geary, Erie County Sheriff’s Road Patrol Chief Scott Joslyn, Commissioner of Homeland Security & Emergency Services Dan Neaverth, Jr., AAA of WNY Director of Public Relations Elizabeth Carey, and NIITEC Executive Director Athena Hutchins.

New this year, the Erie County Public Works Department is seeking public input to name county snowplows. Creative names will be accepted and are due by November 30^th at noon, with submissions to be reviewed and presented to the public for voting December 1 – 9, 2022.
