The Erie County Department of Public Works’ Highways Division has announced the 2024 Road Program, with total investments of over $55 million spread across county roads, bridges and engineering projects. Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz today joined Commissioner of Public Works Bill Geary and Deputy Commissioner Karen Hoak to detail the program.

“The 2024 Road program addresses needs in all corners of Erie County and invests over $55 million in roads and bridges this year, as well as planning for the future. Our winters are harsh and take a toll on our roads, so it is important to repair infrastructure annually but also take a longer view of projects that will be done in the next few years,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz.  “My administration remains committed to providing county residents and motorists with the best roads and bridges possible.”

Mill and Overlay projects represent a $3.7 million investment in 2024 and will occur in four highway districts: Clarence, Hamburg, Harlem, and Concord. In the Clarence district, roads scheduled for Mill and Overlay include Bowen from Clinton to Chairfactory (0.52 miles), Bowen from Chairfactory to Bullis (0.68 miles), and Conner from Stahley to County Road (0.88 miles). In the Hamburg district, scheduled roads include Jennings Road from Genesee to Langford (2.35 miles), Lenox Road from Jennings to Oswald (0.6 miles), East Eden from Haag to Zimmer (0.6 miles), East Eden from Zenner to Keller (1.95 miles), and Lotus Point from Old Lake Shore to Rte. 5 (1.37 miles). In the Harlem district, mill and overlay operations will take place on Baseline Rd. from Bush to Whitehaven (3.2 miles) and Mineral Springs from City Line to Indian Church (1.8 miles), while in the Concord district the work will occur on Zoar Valley from South Cascade to the dead end (0.36 miles). This is a total of 14.31 miles of Erie County roads scheduled for mill and overlay in 2024.

$2.1 million in Cold Recycle & Top Course treatment is also scheduled for 2024 across three highway districts. In the Aurora district, these roads include Vermont St. from Hillside to Hunter’s Creek (1.6 miles) and Phillips from Holland Glenwood to Matteson Corners (2.25 miles), while in the Concord district Fowlerville from Trevett to Springville-Boston (0.42 miles), Pfarner from Brown Hill to West Hill (0.93 miles), and Savage from Genesee to Allen (2.8 miles) will receive work. In the Hamburg district, Clark St. from South Park to Armor (1.4 miles) is on the schedule, making 9.4 total miles of Erie County roads scheduled for 2024.

Oil and Chip operations will be taking place in outlying areas of the county, with over 69 miles of roads scheduled at an investment of over $2 million. These less-traveled roads are predominantly located in Aurora/Wales, Concord, Collins, Sardinia, Eden, Boston, Newstead, Alden, Marilla, Lancaster, and Clarence.

Bridge projects account for $10.9 million in infrastructure investments in 2024, with the Clarksburg Bridge in Eden, a $1.25 million county-funded project, leading the way. Other bridge work, to be funded with federal aid, will be bid in the first quarter of 2024 and includes bridges on North French Road in Amherst, County Road in Clarence, Four Rod Road in Marilla, and Hunters Creek Road in Holland. Bridge washing and deck sealing along with other maintenance represents over $2.1 million of this bridge work total.

Engineering projects represent the largest investments in the 2024 Road program, with over $36.9 million allocated for them, primarily funded solely by Erie County. Among these are the Abbott Rd. & Willett Road rehabilitation project (from Milestrip to Fisher) in Lackawanna, a $6.9 million investment; Phase II of the Borden Road rehabilitation in Cheektowaga, an $8.5 million investment; and Phase I of the New Rd. rehabilitation in Amherst, an $8.45 million investment. Other road rehabilitation projects are scheduled for Bullis Road in Clarence (from Two Rod Rd. to the bridge), Lake Shore Rd. in Evans, Trevett Rd. in Concord, and Back Creek Rd. in Boston. The Trevett Rd. and Back Creek Rd. projects address road slides in those locations.
