The Erie County Complete Count Committee is inviting county residents to apply for a position with the U.S. Census Bureau to become one of the thousands of census takers that are needed to complete a full and accurate 2020 U.S. Census. These temporary positions pay $20 an hour, include paid training, and give people the opportunity to work in their community. Eight recruitment events will take place at public libraries around Erie County on January 25-26 for interested applicants.

“It is important that the upcoming census is as complete as possible and that all county residents are counted. These recruitment events will help put in place the ‘boots on the ground’ that will be out in our communities doing the work,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “Since the census is used to determine the amount our community receives for all sorts of programs, our community loses $2,600 a year in federal funding for every resident not counted. If we miss even 100 residents, we lose $2.6 million over the next ten years. That is money that could have gone towards schools, workforce development, infrastructure, and services to those in need.

Eligible applicants will receive paid training, flexible hours, an opportunity to work in their own zip code, and will be paid a minimum of $20 an hour for performing their critical work. They may also be eligible for mileage reimbursement.

It is important that the person knocking on your door and asking you to complete the census is a neighbor you recognize and trust. Therefore, we need to hire people who represent every facet of our diverse community,” added Amy Brombos of the U.S. Census Bureau’s NY Regional Census Center.

Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old and be able to work legally in the U.S. They must also be able to pass a criminal background check.
