Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined in downtown Buffalo by NYS Assemblymember Monica Wallace (143rd District), Erie County Sheriff John Garcia, Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns, Commissioner of Central Police Services Jim Jancewicz, community members, officials from American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (“ABATE”) of NY Buffalo-Erie Chapter, and roughly 100 motorcyclists to start the motorcycle season with a call for increased safety and awareness. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, with increased ridership and more bikes on the road, and ABATE spread the safety message today as they rolled out for their 33rd annual safety ride.

“More motorcycles are on the road each year, and it’s always a good idea to practice good driving skills, and be aware of road conditions and other drivers sharing the road,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “It is incumbent on those of us sharing the highways with our friends driving their bikes to be aware of their presence at all times, and be extra cautious while driving.”

“We're very grateful to have the County Executive, County Clerk, and Sheriff Garcia, as well as Assemblymember Monica Wallace joining us for the 33rd Annual ABATE Motorcycle Awareness Run. As we mark the beginning of National Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month and remember our fallen brother and sisters, we ask ALL drivers to PLEASE look out for motorcycles, and stay focused on the task of driving,” said Chris Genovese, Legislative Coordinator for ABATE of Buffalo/Erie. “At the end of the day, we that ride just want to make it home safely to our families like everybody else!”

ABATE has 25 chapters across New York state dedicated to promoting motorcycle safety, awareness and education. The organization also pursues fair treatment for all motorcyclists, monitors proposed motorcycle-impacting legislation, and works for freedom of choice regarding safety equipment. ABATE advocates for individuals’ “Right to Ride” while striving to keep members educated on all issues affecting motorcyclists.
