The Erie County Department of Public Works Highways’ Division has announced the initial 2018 program of county roads targeted for repairs, including roads in each of the county’s five highway districts, with mill and overlay work designated for several roads that sustained damage over the winter along with an extensive pavement preservation program for roads in outlying areas. As a cost-saving measure and to maximize efficiency, the road repair program will be conducted by county-employed Highways Division crews rather than contractors, allowing crews to begin working as soon as weather permits and complete these projects in a more timely fashion.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said, “This initial round of work is just a small part of the approximately $28 million in infrastructure improvements to be conducted this year. Unfortunately the long cold winter has taken a toll on area roads. The Department of Public Works will commence this initial round of repairs as soon as the weather permits and the ground has warmed to a temperature suitable for road repair.”

“The initial 2018 Road Program will involve countywide efforts and will address some of the roads that residents have been calling our department about, so we are anxious to get started and will be doing so as soon as weather allows,” said Erie County Commissioner of Public Works Bill Geary. “As the winter weather has stretched considerably into the spring, it has limited our ability to do much more than plowing, salting, and filling potholes. However, as asphalt production ramps up in the warmer weather to come we will begin aggressively working on these roads and repairing the damage from this harsh winter.”

In the Aurora District, Darien Road (from Lewis to Boise) and Holland Glenwood Road (from Phillips Road to Rte. 240) are scheduled for mill and overlay work in 2018, with an additional $650,000 set aside for pavement preservation and crack sealing operations throughout the district. In the Clarence District Girdle Road (from Bullis to Jamison Road) is scheduled for mill and overlay work with an additional $650,000 on hand for pavement preservation and crack sealing throughout the district. Work in the Concord District will include a mill and overlay of Vaughn Road/Rte. 240 (from Genesee to Rte. 39) and of Savage Road (from Rte. 39 to County Line Road) with an additional $650,000 designated for pavement preservation operations and crack sealing throughout the district. The Hamburg District is preparing for mill and overlay on Lakeview Road (from Rte. 20 to Rte. 62 in the Village of Hamburg) and on Zimmerman Road (from Rte. 391 to Shero) and also has similar funds set aside for pavement preservation and crack sealing work.

In the Harlem District county crews will be conducting mill and overlay work on Dodge Road (from Hopkins to Campbell), Hopkins Road (from Sheridan Drive to Maple Road), and North French Road (from Transit Road to Millersport Hwy.).
