New York State DMV to Perform Statewide System Upgrade

Cheektowaga and Mobile Auto Bureaus will be closed on August 2nd

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs has received notification from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) that a state-wide upgrade to the DMV’s central computer system will require a system shutdown on Saturday, August 2nd.

Jacobs wants area motorists to know that there will be no Saturday hours on August 2nd. Both the Cheektowaga Auto Bureau office and the Mobile Auto Bureau located in the AAA in Amherst will be closed on that date.

All Enforcement and Testing Sections close 1 hour before the Office closes.

All Erie County Auto Bureaus, including the County Clerk's Office, will be CLOSED in observance of the following Holidays: New Year's Day; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; President's Day; Good Friday; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Columbus Day; Election Day; Veterans' Day; Thanksgiving Day; Christmas.

Auto Bureau Offices are closed on the Saturday preceding Monday holidays. 

The services provided at the Auto Bureau include:

  • Renewals for operator and motorcycle licenses, permits, and non-driver identification (ID) cards.
  • CDL renewals (except for Hazmat or towing endorsements)
  • Written tests for operators and motorcycle permits
  • Duplicates for all types of licenses, permits and non-driver ID cards
  • Amendments to all types of licenses, permits and non-driver ID cards
  • Conversion of out-of-state driver licenses to New York
  • Renewals of registrations
  • New plates for passenger and commercial vehicles, trailers and motorcycles
  • Duplicate plates for passenger and commercial vehicles, trailers and motorcycles
  • Amendment to registrations for all vehicle types
  • Plate transfers from one vehicle to another for all vehicle types
  • Plate surrenders
  • Enforcement matters including DWI, insurance lapses
