Phillip Muck Recognized for Volunteer Service, Community Involvement

ERIE COUNTY, NY— Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined by members of the Erie County Department of Senior Services in awarding 2012 “Senior of the Year” honors to Phillip Muck of Eden, N.Y.  Surrounded by well-wishers at the Eden Library, Mr. Muck received the award in recognition of his dedication and volunteer service to area residents, his demonstrated leadership, and his continuing involvement in building an active, vibrant community.

“It’s an honor to be here with a citizen like Mr. Muck, who even at age 82 can teach us all a few lessons about what it means to be active and to have a positive impact on the people around us,” said Poloncarz. “He gives back to his community in so many ways, humbly helping so many people, and he does it all without any fanfare. May is Older Americans Month, and Mr. Muck is a great example of all that older Americans are capable of.”

Mr. Muck, an Army veteran and retiree from Lake Shore Central School District, serves as a trustee for the Eden library, Eden Historical Society and the Eden Bicentennial Steering Committee. He is also active with the Boys& Girls Club of Eden, as well as the Evans Lions Club. Additionally, Mr. Muck is active at All Saints Lutheran Church in Hamburg, delivers Meals on Wheels and takes overflow food pantry items to other pantries in need, and works with the Claddagh Commission on developing homes for people with disabilities.

Celebrated nationally since 1963, Older Americans Month gives communities across the country the opportunity to show their appreciation for older adults and the contributions they make to society. This year’s theme, “Never Too Old to Play”, encourages older Americans to stay engaged and active in bringing their communities together, particularly with intergenerational social activities.
