The Erie County Department of Public Works’ Highways Division has announced the completion of its 2020 road and bridge infrastructure repair season, a $24.794 million investment that saw work completed in 23 municipalities across Erie County. 49.4 miles of county roads were addressed in 2020 as well as 4 bridge replacements, 7 bridge rehabilitations and 2 large culvert projects, one a rehabilitation and one a replacement. 

 

“2020 has been a challenging year but the Department of Public Works has been hard at work all across the county, rebuilding, repairing and maintaining our infrastructure,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “This investment underscores my administration’s commitment to providing residents and motorists with the best roads we can. I thank our Public Works team for their great work this year.”

 

Mill and overlay operations were conducted in 8 towns, totaling 10.55 miles of roads with an investment of $1.638 million. These projects included:

 

  • ·         Cheektowaga (George Urban Blvd. from Genesee to Harlem; Pine Ridge Rd. from Walden Ave. to Maryvale)
  • ·         Amherst (Tonawanda Creek Rd. from Old Falls Blvd. to Bear Ridge; Sweet Home Rd. from Eggert Rd.  to Maple Rd.)
  • ·         Clarence (Shimerville from Main St. to Wehrle)
  • ·         Hamburg (Bayview Rd. from Big Tree Rd. to South Park Ave.)
  • ·         East Aurora (South St. from Center to Rte. 16)
  • ·         Angola (Old Lake Shore Rd. between Bennett Bridge and Lake Street)
  • ·         Lancaster (Aurora Street from William St. to Como Park Blvd) and
  • ·         Grand Island (Stony Point from Whitehaven to Beaver Island Pkwy.)

 

2020 mill and overlay/reconstruction projects also commenced in Cheektowaga  on the 1.6-mile, 4-lane stretch of William St. /City Line to the I-90 and in Amherst on Maple Road from Hopkins to Transit, a 3.25 mile stretch. These two projects represent an investment of $2.405 million. The Maple Rd. project has been shut down for the winter but will be completed in Spring 2021.

 

DPW Commissioner William Geary, Jr. added, “This has been a busy year for the Department of Public Works, with numerous road and bridge projects completed across the county including some large mill and overlay operations and over 27 miles of cold recycling on county roads in more rural areas. Our crews have now shifted to winter weather responsibilities so we will be ready to plow and clear county roads during the winter months.”

27.3 miles of roads in nine outlying county municipalities were addressed through cold recycling with a top course treatment, an investment of $3.815 million. These projects were located in:

 

  • ·         Holland (Darling Rd. from Rte.16 to Lewis)
  • ·         Wales (Fish Hill from East Creek to Maple Hill)
  • ·         Colden (Hayes Hollow Rd. from Falls to Partridge)
  • ·         Eden (Schintzius Rd. between Rte. 75 and East Eden Rd.)
  • ·         Angola (Lakeshore Rd. from Lake St. to Point Breeze bridge; Lake St. from Old Lake Shore Rd. to Rte. 5)
  • ·         Newstead (Burdick between Rapids and Tonawanda Creek)
  • ·         Boston (Boston-Colden Rd. from Boston State Rd. to State Rd.)
  • ·         Akron (South Newstead Rd. from Main to Genesee)
  • ·         Concord (Zoar Valley from Trevett Rd. to Gowanda-Zoar Rd.)
  • ·         Clarence (Indian Fall Rd.)  

 

Bridge replacements took place in Newstead (Cedar Street bridge), Boston (Trevett Road bridge, Hillcroft Road bridge), and Evans (Pontiac Road bridge). Bridge rehabilitations such as joint and deck repairs took place in Lancaster, Alden, North Collins, Lackawanna, and West Seneca involving bridges on Schwartz Rd., William St., Westwood Rd., Wende Rd., Langford Rd., Willet Rd., and Ridge Rd. in those communities. Additionally, culverts on Amsdell Rd. in Hamburg and South Creek Rd. in Evans were replaced in 2020, bringing the total investment for bridge and culvert operations to $5.222 million. Elsewhere, $1.264 million in improvements to the Elmwood Ave. Pedestrian & Bicycle Path were completed in Kenmore.

 

Several projects carried over from the 2019 road program were completed in 2020 in the towns of West Seneca, Orchard Park, Evans, and Hamburg. These carryover projects covered 8.3 miles of road and represent an investment of $10.448 million:

 

  • ·         West Seneca (rehab of East & West Road from Union Rd. to Leydecker)
  • ·         Evans (rehab & reconstruction of North and South Main St from Rte. 20 to Rte. 5)
  • ·         Orchard Park (Abbott Rd. from Rte. 20 to Milestrip Rd.; Armor Duells Rd. from Abbott Rd. to Duerr Rd.;  McKinley Pkwy. from Rte. 20 to Willet Rd.)
  • ·         Hamburg (Lake Ave. reconstruction from Rte. 5 to South Park Ave.)  8.3 miles, $10.448 million
