  • In the United States, one in four women will become a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. Here in Erie County, over 10,000 calls were placed to law enforcement to report an incident of domestic violence in 2018 (source: Erie County Central Police Services).

  • The Erie County Commission on the Status of Women wishes to extend our heartfelt condolences to former ECCSW Executive Director Susan Curran Hoyt’s family on her passing this spring 2018. Ms. Curran Hoyt served as the Commission’s executive director from 1997-2001. Under her leadership several reports and programs were created to the great benefit of women in Erie County including the 1997 report, Status of Women in Erie County: An Agenda for Progress and the United Nations Women’s Conference at Beijing-One Year Later. We are grateful for her invaluable contribution.

  • In the United States, one in four women will become a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. The ECCSW works with the community to honor the lives of those affected by domestic violence through our Tribute Garden. Each year before Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, we join with Cornell's Master Gardeners, local youth, and community members to maintain and expand the Tribute Garden while providing community education on the pervasive issue of domestic violence in Erie County.

  • Working to discover extraor-dinary people and places in time, Judith Wellman special-izes in finding historic sites in New York State relating to the ideal of equal rights for all people, with a special focus on the Underground Railroad, women’s rights, and African American history. Judith has been instrumental in researching Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad in Niagara Falls. She is Professor Emerita at the State University of New York at Oswego and Principal Investigator, Historical New York Research Associates.
