An older adult from Columbia County received a call at their home. The caller stated they were from the “Office for the Aging” and wanted to let the older adult know they were the recipient of a legal settlement. The caller first confirmed the individual’s name, then cited the individual’s correct social security number and asked them to confirm that number. The older adult quickly hung up on the caller, without further comment. They then contacted the sheriff’s department and local office for the aging to see if there was any validity to the call. The OFA also reported the incident to their local sheriff’s department and to NYSOFA for increased awareness.
In addition, the NYS Office of the Attorney General provides the following information to share:
You don’t have to be polite when you receive unsolicited phone calls. The safest thing to do is to say “no” and hang up. Legitimate callers will typically provide requests in writing. It is better to be guarded than to fall victim.
Remember the old adage: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Be wary of any offers or deals that sound too good to be true, as they likely are.
