Burke Introduces Youth Concussion Legislation

ERIE COUNTY, NY- Coinciding with Brain Injury Awareness Month, Erie County Legislator Patrick Burke (7th District) has submitted Local Law 2-2 to the Legislature. This initiative would require all coaches, sports staff, referees and officials of organized contact and collision youth sports to be trained to identify the signs and symptoms of concussions.  According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, it is estimated that 3.8 million sports related concussions occur each year. 135,000 of those that suffer from these brain injuries range from 5 to 18 years old.  This legislation will ensure that all minors participating in contact or collision sports in Erie County are properly supervised. 

New York State Reforms Regulations to Prevent Gay Conversion Therapy

Erie County, NY- In October of 2014, Erie County Legislator Patrick Burke (D- 7th District) submitted a resolution that would deem the practice of conversion therapy to be defined as maltreatment under the law in Erie County and New York State.  Conversion therapy is defined as counseling or psychotherapy techniques that attempt to alter ones sexual desires or gender identity.

ERIE COUNTY, NY- Recently media attention has been directed toward the drawn out legal battle between Beth Hoskins, the focus of the Erie County SPCA’s largest raid in its history, and the Erie County SPCA. The revived interest in the five year long Beth Hoskins case has highlighted a forgotten issue. Local Law 5-1, to establish an Erie County Animal Abuse registry, has been languishing in the Erie County Legislature’s committee on Energy and Environment for nearly a year.

ERIE COUNTY, NY - Erie County Legislator Patrick B. Burke has added a new component to the 2 am bar closing debate. Saying that the prohibition on the sale of alcohol before noon on Sundays is a government overreach. Today, Burke submitted the “Mimosa Resolution,” which would call for making Sunday alcohol sales the same as any other day of the week.
