Legislators recognize April as ‘Sexual Assault Awareness Month’ in Erie County

The Erie County Legislature issued a proclamation to recognize the month of April as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” here in Erie County.

Recognized nationally as well, “SAAM” is to raise awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on prevention. In the United States, statistics indicate 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual assault and 1 in 15 men have also been victims in their lifetime.

“In the #MeToo era, awareness about sexual assault is more prevalent than ever,” said Legislator Lynne Dixon. “While it is important that victims are now coming forward, we should also be doing all we can to be proactive on this issue in order to change mindsets, and enact change.  That’s why this month is the opportunity to reflect on how we can continue to raise awareness and direct the appropriate resources toward prevention efforts.”

“Sexual violence is a pervasive issue across the country,” said Legislator Joe Lorigo. “We’ve seen it manifest over the past several years in Hollywood, in the political arena, news media and other industries. Now more than ever, we need to take steps to address the problem moving forward.”

Locally, the Sheriff’s office, DA’s office, the Family Justice Center and other groups provide a wide range of services to combat violence and sexual assault.

“The statistics associated with sexual assault are frightening,” said Legislator Ed Rath. “No individual should ever have to endure this type of trauma. The month of recognition raises awareness and also allows us to commend the groups here in Erie County dedicated to addressing this issue. Many organizations work hard to prevent sexual violence and set victims up with the appropriate resources to help them heal.”
