November 2016 Column - True heroism showed during recent fire

When we all first heard, “there is a fire at the old Bethlehem Steel site,” we knew it could be bad, but we weren’t sure just how massive the blaze would be. Days, not hours, but days later the fire was finally put out. It was during those days we saw our first responders work for hours on end, to the point of exhaustion, trying to contain the blaze as thick black smoke billowed into the sky, causing many to question the safety of the air. School districts were forced to enact emergency procedures to move students to other buildings, causing some confusion for families. The City of Lackawanna was placed under a state of emergency and 300 residents from Bethlehem Park were evacuated. But in the end everyone made it through the ordeal safely.

Legislator Dixon calls on state to end unfunded mandate for child care providers

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon has sponsored a resolution that calls on New York State to fully fund an unfunded mandate placed on child care providers. Provisions of the federal Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) Act are starting to be implemented, including the requirement that childcare providers pay for the fingerprinting of applicants and employees. At an estimated cost of $28 million statewide, this unfunded mandate harms small businesses.
