May 2014 Column - Legislature’s midyear budget hearings critical for monitoring

Believe it or not, in just a few weeks we will have reached the halfway point of 2014. Perhaps the year seems longer for some due to the long, harsh winter, but hopefully we have seen the end of freezing temperatures for at least a few months, which will allow crews to get necessary roadwork done.

Erie County Legislature Majority Leader Joseph Lorigo announces the proposed 2014 Road Project List includes funding to repair roadways throughout his district.

The necessary nuisances of lane closures and detours will be appearing around Erie County as road construction projects get underway. Unfortunately, we do not yet know which county roads are being repaired this year.

In many cases, such as when jewelry or precious antiques are taken, memories and emotions are taken with those items. Too often, these irreplaceable items are never returned.

The Erie County Legislature’s Majority Caucus continues to implement initiatives that will improve efficiency and accountability within the Legislature. Starting in March, the entire Legislative staff was placed on the county’s electronic payroll swipe system; ensuring employees are accountable for their time worked.

February 2014 Column - Politics in government forces significant, unnecessary divides

Last month, Gov. Cuomo made public remarks that “extreme conservatives have no place in the State of New York.” While the comments were off-the-cuff, and taken slightly out of context, they upset a large number of people. He must realize that his comments were offensive and divisive, and should have no role in state government.

‘Passports on the Move’ coming to Elma

Town Supervisor Dennis Powers, Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs and Erie County Majority Leader Joseph Lorigo will co-host a “Passports on the Move” outreach event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Elma Town Hall, 1600 Bowen Road, Elma.
