August 2014 Column - AEDs in county parks can be a lifesaver

Through very unfortunate circumstances, I have become close with a local family whose mission I am honored to support. Amy and Joe Skowronski are working tirelessly to educate Erie County and beyond about myocarditis, a heart condition that took the life of their son, Luke Gould. An energetic young man, Luke loved hockey and was honing his goalkeeping skills when he died without warning at the young age of 10.

July 2014 Column - Community approach needed for preventing elder abuse

Recently, I read an article about the newly created Elder Domestic Violence Shelter Network of Erie County and noted a startling statistic: only 5 percent of elder abuse cases are reported. It is alarming to think how many of our elderly residents fall victim to various forms of abuse without any assistance. As a community, we have a responsibility to change that statistic.

May 2014 Column - Legislature’s midyear budget hearings critical for monitoring

Believe it or not, in just a few weeks we will have reached the halfway point of 2014. Perhaps the year seems longer for some due to the long, harsh winter, but hopefully we have seen the end of freezing temperatures for at least a few months, which will allow crews to get necessary roadwork done.

April 2014 Column - County Legislature taking necessary steps to get ‘shovels in the ground’ as soon as possible

The necessary nuisances of lane closures and detours will be appearing around Erie County as road construction projects get underway. Unfortunately, we do not yet know which county roads are being repaired this year.
