Legislator Miller-Williams Partners with the University at Buffalo Real Experience and Leadership Mentoring Program (REALM)

Mr. Richard Gan, UB Political Science Major

Each year during the Fall and Spring semesters, the University at Buffalo Real Experience and Leadership Mentoring Program (REALM) partners with Legislator Miller-Williams' District Office to provide interested students with the opportunity to spend a day shadowing a professional in the field of Government. This experience allows the student a firsthand view of how leadership skills can help them stand out and succeed in the workplace.

This year, the REALM Experience occurred on Wednesday November 8, 2017 and Mr. Richard Gan was able to tour the various Erie County Departments and was given knowledge about the way that Erie County Government interacts with various Elected Officials and Government Departments to provide services to residents of Erie County.

Legislator Miller-Williams would like to thank Mr. Richard Gan for selecting Erie County Government for his REALM Experience and she would also like to thank the County Executive and all the hard working Erie County staff who helped make this day a success.

Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Relief Fund Accepting Donations at All Erie County Buildings

On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, catastrophic, category 4 Hurricane Maria made direct impact across the entire island of Puerto Rico. It left the entire island without electricity and knocked down cell towers, stopping all communications and other major damage. Many residents had gone days without water or electricity even before Hurricane Maria hit due to the impact of Hurricane Irma. With Erie County having one of the largest Puerto Rican communities outside of the island, it has personally affected many residents who have struggled in recent days, not knowing if their loved ones are safe.

Western New York Latino Leaders have come together to assist the victims of Hurricane Maria, and have established The Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Relief Fund to help provide both immediate and on-going support to the residents of Puerto Rico. To support efforts, resources and involvement are needed from the Buffalo area community.

Multiple donation centers have been set up to collect items for emergency relief from Monday, September 25 to – at least - Friday, October 6. Locations include Buffalo City Hall, All Erie County Buildings, Erie Community College, as well as the Belle Center at 104 Maryland St. (8am-6pm) and St. Anthony’s Church at 306 Ingham Ave. Lackawanna (10am-12pm and 2-4pm). Once these desperately needed items have been collected, they will be shipped directly to a collection center located in Puerto Rico.

The following is a list of much-needed supplies: bottled water, D batteries, canned goods, old-style can opener, candles, flashlights, baby supplies (diapers and wipes). A more extensive list of donation drop-off locations and requested items can be found by going to: www.city-buffalo.com

Western New York Latino Leaders have also set up other donation options. A bank account, managed through the Belle Center, has been established at M & T Bank. Tax-deductible donation checks may be made payable to the Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Relief Fund. A Go-Fund-Me account has also been set up. You can find the link on the local FB Page: Puerto Rican Hurricane Maria Relief Fund.

Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams Calls for the Reinstatement of the Erie County Community Corrections Advisory Board

On Monday September 18, 2017, Legislator Miller-Williams submitted a Resolution to the Erie County Legislature calling for the immediate reinstatement of the Erie County Community Corrections Advisory Board (ECCCAB). ECCCAB is a oversight committee responsible for identifying and advocating for deficiencies in Holding Center and Correctional Facility practices.

Article V, Section III of the bylaws established to govern the ECCCAB states that regular meetings are to be held a minimum four times per year, with an annual meeting to be held in January of each year, however, the Advisory Board has not held a meeting since August 6, 2013. Upon approval of the Resolution by the full Legislature, all interested parties should forward their resumes to the Clerk of the Legislature to be considered as an Advisory Board member and attend the subsequent meeting of the Erie County Legislature's Public Safety Committee.
