Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams Empowers Women at the 47th Annual NACW Conference and Empowerment Summit

The Erie County Commission on the Status of Woman was proud for Buffalo to be this year’s host for the National Association of Commissions for Women’s Annual Conference. Hosted at the Hyatt Regency Hotel & Conference Center, this year’s Conference held earlier this month was a meeting place for advocates and all interested individuals to come together and discuss many of the key issues women in America face today.

Desiring to bring positive change, Erie County Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams took part in a panel discussion on women in politics, alongside Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, and other women who also hold public office. Women from local and national women’s organizations, elected officials, commission staff, and women from across the nation all gathered to hear distinguished keynote speakers and continue to learn how they can best promote the empowerment and status of women in society.

In a study from 2014, it was determined that women make up nearly 51 percent of the U.S. population; of the 435 voting members of the House, just over 18 percent are women; in the Senate, the figure is 20. Further inspired and driven by the Commission’s goals, Legislator Miller-Williams hopes to continue acting however possible to raise those numbers and bring them into equilibrium with that of men.

Legislator Miller-Williams stated, “It was an honor to be a part of such a great and important event for women. Our work as public officials includes uplifting and strengthening all members of society, and bringing issues such as gender pay equality to the forefront is necessary to ensure that the status, rights, and equality of women continue to be fought for and never forgotten.”

The five day event featured numerous speakers with each day designated its own headline, including Embracing Our Past, Assessing the Present Landscape, and Empowering the Future. After another successful Conference, the Commission desires to continue making progress in the areas of social empowerment, political empowerment, and economic empowerment in hopes that all attendees can effectively advocate for women’s rights and create their own programs and initiatives to help raise the status of women.

Another Record Breaking Success For The Broadway Market Rabies Clinic

The 2017 Rabies Clinic at the Broadway Market was another record breaking success. Over 900 cats, dogs and even ferrets were able to receive their rabies vaccine shot to protect them from the increased likelihood to contract rabies after the warmer winter we've had in WNY.

For more infomation about other free rabies clinics or parvo vaccine clinics (for dogs only), call my District Office at 716-842-0490.

Legislator Miller-Williams Calls For More Transparency in Erie County Government

Legislator Miller-Williams has introduced legislation to audio and video record Erie County Legislature Sessions, Committee Meetings and Public Hearings, an effort that will provide greater notice and transparency in the introduction, discussion and adoption of items that come before the Legislature in accordance with New York State Open Meetings Law.

“Many constituents throughout Erie County are currently using the internet and social media to research information and I believe constituents should have the option to stay connected with the Erie County Legislature. With the option of real-time publishing of Sessions and Meetings, constituents will be able to review and research the work being done through the Erie County Legislature via our website, Public Access channels and through social media”, stated Legislator Miller-Williams.

Erie County Legislature does not currently video record Legislative Sessions, Committee Meetings and Public Hearings to publish on Public Access channels. This practice will engage Erie County’s Senior population, promote public participation and increase access to government for constituents throughout Erie County.
