LEGISLATOR MILLS ANNOUNCES FREE HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP-OFF

Erie County Legislator John Mills is encouraging Erie County residents to take advantage of a free household hazardous waste drop-off on Saturday, May 8th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Southtowns collection event will be held by appointment only with COVID-19 safety protocols in effect.

 

Appointments for a time slot can be made by visiting www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling (716) 858-6800. The exact location of the event will be emailed after registration.

 

Items accepted include:

  • Pesticides, fertilizers, pool and household chemicals/cleaners
  • Oil-based paints, spray cans
  • Paint thinner, stripper, stains and solvents
  • Gasoline, kerosene, antifreeze
  • Mercury (thermometers, thermostats)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Propane camping size 1 lb. cylinders

 

Items not accepted include:

  • Latex paint
  • Automobile tires and car batteries
  • Motor oil
  • Propane tanks (20lb)
  • Computers and other electronics
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Smoke detectors and lightbulbs
  • Commercial/industrial waste

 

Legislator Mills said, “This is an excellent way to get rid of those household hazardous waste items that have been piling up throughout the years. Many people are spring cleaning and clearing out their garages, basements and other areas around the house and need a way to dispose of the items properly. If this sounds like you, I strongly encourage you to make an appointment.”
