Erie County Legislator John Mills introduced a resolution in opposition to the closure of Gowanda Correctional Facility, highlighting the negative impact it will have on the community and New York State prison system.

The closure was announced abruptly in December 2020 providing short notice to roughly 700 employees and their families. Typically, the decision to close a prison requires at least a one-year notice to employees and an opportunity to study the impact and cost savings.

Legislator Mills said, “Ordering the closure of Gowanda Correctional Facility without performing due diligence is irresponsible on behalf of New York State. Now, hundreds of employees are facing transfers and having their lives turned upside-down. This will significantly impact our community, especially many people I represent. The Governor should halt the closure and study the negative implications this will likely have on our region and the New York State prison system as a whole.”

The resolution passed the Legislature last Thursday. A copy of it can be viewed here.
