Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro recently toured the Erie County Home on Walden Avenue in Alden to see the condition of the buildings and property. This comes after Legislator Todaro voted earlier this month to enter into a contract with CBRE-Buffalo to sell the Home as well as the property.

The main building is 650,000 square feet—the entire site totals 152-acres. In 2019 a “for sale” sign was posted on the property and, as a result, several interested developers inquired but no deal was reached without a property broker.  Although vacant, the County is still financially responsible for the maintenance of the property.

While touring the Erie County Home, Legislator Todaro found the buildings have fallen into complete disrepair with mold, crumbling walls, grass growing inside and animals using the space as shelter to name just a few of the concerns.

Legislator Todaro said, “I am glad I had an opportunity to tour the Erie County Home. This property has sat vacant since 2005—it once served thousands of residents, but now it is an eyesore for the residents of Alden and simply a burden for County taxpayers as we have to shell out money for maintenance and upkeep. After touring the facility, it was made clear that deciding to sell was indeed the right decision. We need to get this site sold and off of our shoulders and I will do whatever I can to make that happen.”
