Erie County Legislator Joe Lorigo recently introduced a resolution urging the Governor to re-open movie theaters and local live theaters throughout New York State and in Erie County.

Right now, New York State is one of two states in the entire country that has not allowed theaters to re-open. Theater owners have been left in the dark since the COVID-19 closures began, while other entertainment venues, such as bars, restaurants, and bowling alleys have been allowed to re-open with safety measures in place.

Legislator Lorigo said, “Movie theaters and other live theaters are teetering on the edge of survival right now. I’ve spoken with theater owners in my legislative district, including Lynn Kinsella of the Aurora Theater, who is eagerly awaiting the go-ahead to begin running her business again. Keeping theaters closed while other businesses are re-opening just goes to show that the Governor’s rules are completely arbitrary. Residents, theater owners, and their employees deserve better. If the Governor doesn’t allow them to re-open, many will be forced to close their doors permanently.”

Several weeks ago, Legislator Lorigo also attended a press conference at the Aurora Theater calling on the Governor to re-open local theaters. Since no action has been taken by the Governor’s office, Legislator Lorigo clocked in a resolution for last Thursday’s session of the Legislature. A copy of that resolution can be viewed here.
