After New York State Attorney General Letitia James issued a report highlighting Governor Cuomo’s misleading death count in New York State nursing homes, Legislators Lorigo, Greene, Todaro, and Mills are inviting her to Buffalo to report her findings. The Minority Caucus’ resolution inviting AG James and calling for a New York State Legislature investigation into the matter was unanimously supported by members of the Erie County Legislature Thursday morning. The Legislature has already had conversations with the Attorney General’s Office about their request and are waiting a formal response.

Legislator Lorigo said, “The lack of transparency and misleading information coming out of the Governor’s office is unacceptable. We deserve to know how these numbers were miscalculated and who is responsible. I hope to get those answers for those living in nursing homes and their loved ones. This is why we are inviting AG James to present her findings to the Erie County Legislature. I have personally reached out to her office and look forward to hearing back.”

Legislator Greene said, “The Attorney General’s report revealed disturbing information. The initial numbers released by Governor Cuomo distort the truth and expose a serious failure on his administration. We need to hold the Governor’s office accountable, and I hope AG James will agree to meet with the Erie County Legislature.”

Legislator Todaro said, “I’d appreciate an opportunity to hear from AG James and ask questions on behalf of Erie County residents. I applaud her investigation into the Governor’s office and it is inexcusable that his administration would fabricate nursing home death totals. This cover-up must be taken seriously.”

Legislator Mills said, “Governor Cuomo failed our most vulnerable residents. We need answers. Those who died and their loved ones deserve answers. I hope to hear more from the Attorney General on her thorough investigation and what was uncovered, especially in Erie County.”

Democrats and Republicans from across New York State have asked for a legislative investigation on the matter. High ranking Democratic Senator Liz Krueger (Manhattan) has said there was an “intentional underreporting of deaths” and has called for rolling back of the governor’s emergency powers.
