Following news that Governor Cuomo intends to overlap the New York State and Erie County fairs this August, members of the Erie County Legislature’s Minority Caucus have introduced a resolution in opposition and urged Governor Cuomo to reconsider this decision. The Governor’s plan would add five days to the state fair causing it to interfere with eight other county fairs across the state.

Legislator Rath said, “County fairs, including ours here in Erie County, are beloved community traditions across New York State. The overlap would hurt vendors who conduct business at both. Our resolution urges the governor to rethink this proposal and allow fairs to operate without interference.”

Legislator Mills said, “This proposal is bad for vendors, companies, and other fairgoers who need space between events. An overlap in dates could strain these merchants to try to be in two places at once, or miss out on an opportunity. We are hoping all parties can come to an agreement that will accommodate everyone.”

Legislator Lorigo said, “As always with Andrew Cuomo, it’s ‘shoot first; ask questions later.’ Rather than take anyone or anything else into consideration, he announces that he’s extending the length of the New York State Fair.  If the Governor actually paid any attention to New York State, he would know how important the Erie County Fair and other county fairs and festivals are to New Yorkers and business owners across the State.  Hopefully Friday’s meeting will result in an outcome that preserves the interest of the Erie County Fair operators, vendors, and participants.”

Legislator Todaro said, “This would be a financial hit to vendors who rely on setting up shop at both events. It’s also a shame that the Governor didn’t communicate with fair representatives before moving forward with this plan. Instead of prioritizing one fair over others, the governor should be promoting the economic interests of all regions. My colleagues and I are urging Governor Cuomo to work with Erie county fair management and find a solution in support of them.”

The NYS Fair is expected to meet with administrators from nine county fairs throughout the state, including Erie County, on Friday to discuss the issues and concerns of the 52-member New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs.
